The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) on September 21, 2026, has issued a circular highlighting the risks associated with indiscriminate use of painkillers (NSAIDs) and antibiotics, including chronic kidney disease and antimicrobial resistance.
The following has been stated:
• NSAIDs and antibiotics are generally covered under prescription-based sale requirements under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Drugs Rules, 1945. Most NSAIDs fall under Schedule H, while most antibiotics fall under Schedule H1.
• The general public should not use NSAIDs or antibiotics repeatedly, indiscriminately or for prolonged periods without medical advice. Antibiotics should not be self-medicated, shared, or used from leftover medicines.
• Healthcare professionals should prescribe these medicines only when clinically indicated, considering the patient's condition and risk factors. NSAIDs should generally be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest appropriate duration, particularly for patients at risk of renal impairment.
• Pharmacists, retailers and distributors must strictly comply with prescription and sale requirements for Schedule H/H1 drugs and must not facilitate self-medication.
• Hospitals and healthcare institutions are advised to strengthen rational prescribing, prescription review, monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship.
• State/UT Drugs Control Authorities are requested to create awareness and ensure compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Drugs Rules, 1945.
